Oliver BC: Canada’s Wine Capital

The Golden Mile Bench, world-class wineries, farm-to-table restaurants, and one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the country.

Wine Country Cycling Fruit Stands Restaurants Family-Friendly

Oliver sits at the heart of the South Okanagan, 25 kilometres north of Osoyoos on Highway 97. It officially carries the title of Canada’s Wine Capital, and it earns the name. The Golden Mile Bench, a gravelly south-facing slope along the east side of the highway, is one of the finest wine-growing terroirs in the country. Over 40 wineries operate in the Oliver area.

But Oliver is more than wine. A restored river channel running through town has been converted into a flat cycling trail. The fruit stands are exceptional in summer. And the restaurant scene, anchored by winery dining rooms and a handful of excellent independent spots, punches well above the town’s weight of about 5,000 people.

Things to Do in Oliver

Okanagan River Hiking & Cycling Trail

The Okanagan River was channelized decades ago and the restoration project created a walking and cycling path alongside the restored river channel, running right through town and stretching south toward Osoyoos. It’s flat, paved, and a genuinely lovely way to spend an afternoon. The 18-kilometre route from Oliver to Osoyoos is one of the best easy cycling trips in the South Okanagan.

Fruit Stands

The stretch of Highway 97 between Oliver and Osoyoos has some of the best fruit stands in the entire Okanagan. Cherries arrive in late June, apricots in July, and peaches, nectarines, and plums through August. Many farms also offer U-pick. Ask at any stand which variety is peaking that week.

Hiking & Parks

Ripley Lake Provincial Park offers a short trail through ponderosa pine forest. Fairview Ghost Town, just west of Oliver, is a historical site where you can walk through the remains of a 19th-century mining town. The McIntyre Bluff hike north of town rewards a moderate climb with sweeping views down the valley.

Where to Eat in Oliver

The dining scene in Oliver overdelivers for a town its size, largely because the winery restaurants set a high bar.

Where to Stay in Oliver

Oliver has a small selection of accommodation. Many visitors stay in Osoyoos (20 minutes south) or at the winery inns.
