Best Areas for Vacation Rentals

Osoyoos Lake

Lakefront properties on Osoyoos Lake are the most coveted in the South Okanagan. Warm water, desert setting, and the most sunshine in Canada. Properties on the north arm of the lake tend to have calmer water and more privacy. Properties near town are more convenient for restaurants and groceries. Search for “Osoyoos lakefront” and filter by minimum one bedroom per guest — Osoyoos draws big family groups and sleeping arrangements matter.

Skaha Lake, Penticton

Skaha Lake properties offer the best family swimming in the valley — the lake is shallow, calm, and warm. Properties on the west and south shores are generally quieter than the busy Penticton town beach area. Look for properties with dock access; paddling straight out from your rental is one of the Okanagan’s best experiences.

Naramata Bench

The 15 km bench road north of Penticton is lined with vineyard properties that occasionally appear on VRBO and Airbnb. Staying on the Naramata Bench puts you within walking distance of 40+ wineries — literally walk out the door and down the road to tasting rooms. Availability is limited; book months ahead if you want one of these for summer.

Okanagan Lake (West Kelowna / Peachland)

The west side of Okanagan Lake between Westbank and Peachland has a concentration of lakeshore properties that are often better value than equivalent properties in Kelowna proper. The Westside Road wineries are minutes away. The drive into Kelowna via the floating bridge takes about 15 minutes. Strong inventory of 3–5 bedroom lake houses for family groups.

Kalamalka Lake, Vernon

Properties on Kalamalka Lake near Vernon are among the most scenic in BC. The turquoise water photographed from a private dock is genuinely extraordinary. Inventory is thinner than Okanagan Lake but what exists is very high quality. This is where Okanagan regulars end up when they want something different from the standard south valley experience.

What to Look For

Lakefront vs. Lake View vs. Lake Access

These are meaningfully different and the terminology matters:

Read the listing description carefully. “Steps to the lake” could mean 50 steps or 500. Ask the host directly before booking.

Air Conditioning

Non-negotiable for July and August. Temperatures regularly hit 38–40°C. Many older Okanagan properties do not have central air — they may have window units or nothing at all. Confirm before booking.

Minimum Stay Requirements

Most Okanagan vacation rentals require a 3–7 night minimum in peak summer. If you want a weekend rental in July, start looking 3–4 months ahead and be prepared to pay a premium for shorter minimums.

Pet Policy

The Okanagan is dog-friendly territory. Many rentals accept pets with a fee. Filter specifically for this if it applies — don’t assume.
